Are you familiar with Accelerate Kootenays? Let us fill you in!
Accelerate Kootenays is Canada's first community-driven, collaborative strategy to build a clean transportation network.
It is a 2-year, $1.5 million initiative of the Regional Districts of East Kootenay, Central Kootenay and Kootenay Boundary with support from Columbia Basin Trust, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, the Province of BC, Teck, FortisBC, and BC Hydro. (Source: AccelerateKootenays.ca)
Aside from helping our environment to reduce vehicle emissions, how else can we benefit from electric vehicle transportation? A few additional benefits would be enhancing Kootenay tourism with charging stations located near high traffic and community hot spots, adding a new option of reliable travel throughout the area, and cost savings. According to Accelerate Kootenays, filling your car with electricity, instead of gas, can save you at least $1,200 a year! Yes please.
Why the Kootenays? Compared to urban areas where the distance to travel to certain places is often shorter because of density, the Kootenays produces a greater amount of emissions due to the distances between towns. The Accelerate Kootenays website has a great FAQ section to clarify a few further things about this technology.
The project is facilitated by the Community Energy Association. We connected with their communications team in late 2017 about a possible collaboration and we are super excited to say that we made it happen. This summer, with support from BC Hydro and FortisBC, the #RuralEV team will be travelling throughout the Kootenays, bringing the experience of driving and electric vehicle to people across the region, and they’re sporting custom shirts designed by us! The EV team wanted our mountain range design as it represents the regions they'd be travelling to and the pride we all have for the Kootz. We couldn't agree more that it's an awesome "fit".
We feel that the Kootenays in general has always been slightly ahead of the curve for a rural area on keeping things green. Being blessed with such a truly natural and beautiful area to live, work, visit and play in, we do have an appreciation for respecting mother nature and doing our best to keep the environment front of mind. If you've started to see the charging stations popping up in the region - now you know what they're for! There are now charging stations from Greenwood to Sparwood and up to Revelstoke as part of the project.
